5、msandJeffersonoftenclashed.Adamsalsomadewhatmanyhistoriansconsideramistakeinchoosinghiscabinet.AdamssimplykeptWashingtonsofficialadvisers,mostlytosatisfypoliticalopponents.Butlater,Adamslearnedthatmanyofhiscabinetmembersopposedhim,too.HistorianJohnFerlingsaysAdamswasinoverhishead,andstartedswimmingu
6、pstreamwalmostfromthestartofhispresidency.ForeignpolicycrisisOntopofallthat,Adamsfacedaforeignpolicycrisis.AftertheFrenchRevolution,GreatBritainalliedwithotherEuropeannationsagainstFrance.Theywantedtokeeptheunrestfromspreadingtotheircountries.AdamsworkedhardtomakesuretheU.S.didnotgetpulledintoawarbe
7、tweenFranceandGreatBritain.ButFrancedidnottrusttheU.S.IttriedtointerrupttradebyseizingU.S.ships.Adamswantedtoresolvetheproblempeacefully.Hethreatenedmilitaryaction,buthealsosentdiplomatstotalkwithFrenchofficials.Adamsaimedforanhonorablepeace,zwithFrance.Ittooksometimebuthegotit.HistorianJohnFerlings
